Cairo, Egypt is one city you absolutely should not miss when visiting the country. I tell my friends, family, and basically anyone who asks that Cairo and Egypt as a whole has become one of my favorite destinations to visit. Despite what you may or may not hear about traveling in Egypt (stay tuned for my next blog with tips to know before you go), Cairo is packed with things to do and see. From fascinating museums to beautiful religious sites, here are the top eight attractions and experiences to enjoy while staying in this incredible city.

1. Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)

The Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest archaeological museum in the world and a must-see in Egypt. It houses over 100,000 artifacts, including the full treasures of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. With striking architecture, views of the Pyramids of Giza, and plenty of restaurants and shops, it’s more than just a museum visit. The full grand opening is set for November 2025, but parts are already open to explore (just like I did!).

  • Ticket Cost (Foreign Visitors): EGP 1,220 (about $26 USD)
  • Average Visit Time: 3–4 hours
  • Opening Hours:
    • Daily (except Sat & Wed): GEM Complex 8:30 AM – 7 PM, Galleries 9 AM – 6 PM (last entry 5 PM)
    • Saturday & Wednesday: GEM Complex 8:30 AM – 10 PM, Galleries 9 AM – 9 PM (last entry 8 PM)

2. Explore the Pyramids of Giza, Saqqara, and Memphis

No trip to Egypt is complete without standing in front of the Pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You can also step back even further in time by visiting Saqqara, home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser — the oldest pyramid in Egypt. Nearby, the ancient city of Memphis offers fascinating ruins and statues that tell the story of Egypt’s first capital. Together, these sites give you a powerful glimpse into the origins and glory of ancient Egyptian civilization. I recommend hiring a tour guide — they’ll help with avoiding unwanted scouts and give you deeper insights into Egypt’s history. I booked mine through Klook, which made the experience smooth and stress-free.

  • Klook Tour Cost: About $57.40 (includes guide, attractions, lunch, and transportation)
  • Average Visit Time: Full day

3. Discover the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo

This museum holds one of the most important collections of Islamic artifacts in the world, with pieces dating back to different Islamic dynasties. From intricately carved wood to beautiful ceramics, it showcases the artistic and cultural heritage of the Islamic world.

  • Ticket Cost (Foreign Visitors): EGP 340 (about $7 USD)
  • Average Visit Time: 1–2 hours

4. Take a Day Tour to Alexandria from Cairo

If you have an extra day to spare in Cairo, consider a trip to Alexandria, the historic city by the Mediterranean. Explore landmarks like the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, Pompey’s Pillar, and the stunning Bibliotheca Alexandrina. I booked my tour guide on Klook, which included round-trip transportation from my hotel in Cairo to the attractions in Alexandria, along with a knowledgeable guide. This day offered me the chance to learn even more about the country’s layered history.

  • Klook Tour Cost: About $100 (includes guide, attractions, lunch, and transportation)
  • Average Visit Time: Full day

5. Ride a Boat on the Nile River

Sailing along the Nile River is one of the most memorable experiences you can have in Cairo. Whether you choose a traditional felucca ride at sunset or a lively dinner cruise, it’s the perfect way to take in stunning views of the city while enjoying a peaceful break from the busy streets. When I went, it was during the afternoon for a 30-minute ride, and it was still a relaxing experience — especially when the wind blew across us, which felt so refreshing!

  • Ticket Cost: EGP 560 (about $10 USD per person)
    • This depends on which company, type of boat, and time of ride. For reference, I paid about $10 per person for a 30-min felucca ride. Our tour guide arranged this experience, so I don’t remember which company or exact location we used.
  • Average Visit Time: 30 minutes – 2 hours

6. Explore Mosques, Churches, & a Synagogue in Old Cairo

This is where Egypt’s rich religious history comes alive and is the perfect place to learn about the Abrahamic religions that are prevalent in Egypt. I explored sites such as the Muhammad Ali Mosque, the Hanging Church, the Ben Ezra Synagogue, and more with a tour guide, which gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of Egypt’s diverse spiritual heritage. I booked this tour through Klook, which helped make the day smooth and informative.

  • Klook Tour Cost: About $37.50 (includes guide, lunch, and transportation)
  • Average Visit Time: Full day

7. Shop at Khan El Khalili Bazaar

If you’re looking for souvenirs or simply enjoy shopping, Khan El Khalili Bazaar is one of the most popular places to visit in Cairo. Here, you’ll find everything from handmade jewelry and lamps to spices and traditional keepsakes.

    • Do note that on public holidays and special occasions, such as Eid and Ramadan, hours may be adjusted.

8. Visit the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC)

One of my favorite museums to visit when I was in Egypt! This museum is famous for housing the Royal Mummies Hall, where you can see the preserved remains of Egypt’s ancient pharaohs. While pictures and videos aren’t allowed inside, it was such a surreal experience to see them in person. Aside from the hall, you can also find pottery, textiles, tools, and jewelry that trace Egypt’s history from prehistoric times through the modern day, making it a fascinating place to explore.

  • Ticket Cost (Foreign Visitors): EGP 550 (about $12 USD)
  • Average Visit Time: 2–3 hours
