If you’re exploring Tokyo and want to experience a neighborhood full of charm and exciting activities, Asakusa is the perfect place to add to your itinerary. From cultural gems to unique local experiences, this area captures the spirit of Tokyo in a way that feels both traditional and lively. Keep reading below for the top things to do in Asakusa!

1. Sensoji Temple

Sensoji Temple is one of the oldest and most iconic temples in Tokyo, filled with history and a spiritual atmosphere. A highlight of visiting is drawing an omikuji fortune. I drew one myself and got a good fortune, though many say this temple is known for giving out more negative slips. If that happens, you can simply tie it to the racks provided to leave the misfortune behind. For a calmer experience, it is best to visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive.

2. Nakamise Shopping Street

When you visit Sensoji Temple, chances are you will pass through Nakamise shopping street. After exploring the temple, walk along the street to see the many shops and stalls. I walked through myself and found everything from traditional snacks to small trinkets, each making for a perfect souvenir. It is a lively area that adds color and culture to the temple visit. Strolling through here is a great way to end your time at Sensoji.

3. Street Food in Asakusa

Japanese food is one of my favorites, and Asakusa is a great place to try it. While walking through Nakamise Street, you will find plenty of stalls selling local snacks and sweets. I recommend trying taiyaki, the fish shaped cake with sweet fillings, or indulging in a modern treat like matcha mont blanc. You can also discover classics such as ningyo yaki or crunchy kaminari okoshi, both popular with locals and visitors. Sampling street food here is the perfect way to experience Asakusa’s flavors while exploring the area.

4. Hello Kitty Store

Calling all Hello Kitty fans — this spot is a must visit in Asakusa. The store is two floors filled with Sanrio items, from wallets and stationery to plushies you will want to bring home. I loved browsing through and seeing how cute the designs were, especially since some items are unique to Japan. Whether you are shopping for yourself or picking up a gift for another Hello Kitty lover, this store is the perfect place to find a special souvenir.

5. Matcha Making Class

When visiting Japan, I highly recommend joining a class to truly immerse yourself in the culture. I took a matcha making class in Asakusa that I booked through Klook, and it ended up being one of my favorite experiences. The group was small, with fewer than ten people, and we sat on traditional mats while our teacher introduced us to the origins of matcha before guiding us through the steps of making it the traditional way. As a matcha lover, I found it both fun and meaningful, and I even had the chance to connect with people from all over the world.
